The term metaverse refers to a digital reality that combines aspects of social media, online video games, augmented & virtual Reality (AR & VR), and cryptocurrencies to allow users to interact virtually. The word “metaverse” is a portmanteau of the prefix “meta” (meaning beyond) and “universe.”
Before we begin to talk about things like VR headsets, you may want to think of the metaverse in a historical context. Even before Neal Stephenson coined the term. You may remember when the world wide web was the next big thing and then it was smart phones. In my mind, the best way to understand the metaverse is imagine the things you do everyday and think about how the metaverse would make them different. The metaverse is a virtual world where people can work, play, and socialize. This is where we get the concept of the digital twin. In the metaverse, your digital twin is a digital representation of yourself.
There’s so much more to say about this, but let’s stop here for the moment.
